Residential Rainwater Harvesting Essentials

Looking to start a quick and easy rainwater harvesting collection system? There's very little that you need to get started, and additions or modifications to your system can be made further down the road as you better figure out your needs or want to expand your collection capacity. Take a look below to see our favourite starter products for a residential rainwater harvesting system - easy to get a hold of and simple to set up!

Rain Barrel/Collection Container

The first component you'll need is a receptacle for water collection. Depending on how much you want to spend, where you're placing the tank, and how much water you want to collect, there are a wide variety of options. For residential systems, starting with barrels that are between 50-150 US gallons is a good option if you're not sure how much water you'll be using. These containers are less expensive than a larger option, and easier to situate if you're working with small spaces. Some of the smaller rain barrels that we offer are:

GRAF Classic Round Rain Barrel (pictured with base - sold separately)

This is a standard option with a basic spout and stand. Available in 82 or 135 USG capacities, this is a basic starter rain barrel that will serve you well for years to come. Both sizes + stands are currently in stock with us and available for purchase! View on our website here.

GRAF Classic Rectangular Rain Barrel (pictured with base - sold separately)

This barrel is available in 80 or 137 USG capacity and connects easily to one of our downpipe adapters. Similar to the round barrel, this is a practical base model that is a sturdy and long-lasting option. View on our website here.

GRAF Sienna Round Rain Barrels (pictured with base - sold separately).

This barrel is available in 80 USG capacity and features an attractive, neutral colour. This is a great option for those concerned about the aesthetics of their rain harvesting setup, but who still want to take advantage of a practical collection system. Both the barrel and stand are currently is stock and available for pickup! View on our website here.

Filter/Diverter

After you've selected your collection receptacle, the next step is to connect your rain barrel to a downpipe in order to start collecting rainwater. This requires a connection to the downpipe to divert the water flow into the rain barrel, and ideally a filter to help get rid of large debris like leaves and sticks. There are several options available, depending on how much time and money you want to devote to the setup and installation - the following options are a basic setup that is great if you're just getting started with your system and need a quick install.

Speedy Downpipe Adapter

This quick connector piece is suitable for up to 860 square feet, and is compatible with round piping anywhere from 2.7" - 4.7".
