BARR has done a number of custom potable water tank projects over the years for use in RV's. One of the most important parts of RV potable water tank maintenance is sanitization. Sanitizing your tank ensures a higher safety standard of the water that will eventually be consumed. Sanitizing should happen for both new and used tanks, and should become a regular routine in the care and preservation of your potable water tank. Bacteria can grow under many different conditions, and regular disinfecting can help keep harmful bacteria under control and out of your water supply.
Below is one method for sanitizing your tank, although other solutions and methods can also be utilized when caring for your tank. Follow the steps for a safe and simple disinfecting method!
(1) Create a chlorine solution. This can be prepared by using 1 gallon of water and 3
cups of either Clorox or Purex household bleach (5% sodium hypochlorite solution). Ensure that your tank is empty first, then pour the chlorine solution into the tank. Use 1 gallon of solution for each 15 gallons of tank capacity.
(2) Fill the tank with fresh water. Open each faucet and drain cock until all air has been released and entire system is filled.
(3) Allow the water and solution to stand for 3 hours. After the sitting period, drain and flush the system with potable water. This part is very important - make sure to only use potable water when flushing to avoid accidental re-contamination of any kind.
(4) To remove any excess chlorine taste or odor that might be lingering, prepare a solution of one quart vinegar to five gallons of water and allow this solution to agitate in the tank for several days. The water can be agitated simply by vehicle motion. Once a few days have passed, drain the tank again and flush with potable water. This step is very important!
(5) You're done! Make sure that these steps are repeated relatively frequently to ensure a longer life for your tank and safe water consumption at all times.
